Are you tired or have you been taking treatment for low thyroid function and still are tired? If so then desiccated thyroid extract may be something for you to explore!

Desiccated thyroid Extract was the first ever treatment prescribed for patients with low thyroid functions (Hypothyroidism). Published studies of its established success in treating patients with hypothyroidism are available as early as 1920. It remained almost an exclusive treatment for Hypothyroidism till early 1960s when it began to be replaced by Levothyroxine or T4, or by combinations of T4 and T3. Cultural fashion and marketing played a major role in this change over.

Desiccated Thyroid Extract is described as the cleaned, dried, and powdered thyroid gland previously deprived of connective tissue and fat… obtained from domesticated animals that are used for food by man (USP XVI). The extract is formulated as pills as well as powder with addition of some fillers and binders in varying quantities. The potency of the Extract is calculated by measuring the iodine contents as well as the presence of actual hormones in the extract. It is known by various names such as Natural Thyroid, Natural Thyroid Hormone, Thyroid USP or Thyroid BP. Commercial brands include Armour, Naturethroid & Westhroid by RLC Labs which is the oldest one.

Desiccated thyroid is preferred by a growing body of patients and doctors who claim better and almost dramatic relief of symptoms such as fatigue and depressed mood in patients diagnosed with low thyroid function. Better response to the Desiccated Thyroid Extract is attributed to its natural and balanced constituents which include not only T3 and T4 but also T1, T2 and calcitonine.

It is particularly true in cases where the conventional treatment (T4) has been taken for long term without any or little success in ameliorating the symptoms of low thyroid function. Such patients are termed as resistant low thyroid function and it is very tiring and exhausting for most of the patients.

The usual daily dose of Thyroid Extract may vary from 30-60 mg. It is monitored by clinical symptoms along with usual laboratory tests.

  1. I’m delighted to see that the idea of treatment with T3 is now acknowledged here, but from what I can see (I clicked the read more, but it didn’t expand the article) there is no mention of T3 actually being available in the Middle East. Forgive me if I have overlooked something.

I live in Jeddah, KSA, and I have seen 4 endocrinologists in the last few months in an attempt to get T3 and Rt3 blood tests in order to manage my hashimotos, but none of these doctors are even willing to discuss medicating with T3 and tell me the only test they will perform is the standard TSH – which as anyone with a more serious thyroid disorder will tell you, is inadequate.

It would be great if you could circulate information regarding the doctors, hospitals and locations that are open to treatment with T3, so that those patients who were previously on natural desiccated thyroid (bovine / porcine) but have been forced to take synthetic T4 treatment because of the lack of availability, can revert to their normal/successful treatment plan.

I hope to see something on this, as I am one of those very patients!

  2. Hi Amtul,I’m living in the UAE and would like to know if you can provide info regarding doctors and hospitals within the UAE?

Thank you so much for your time.

  3. @ Lea Muellerstein:
Many international pharmacies can ship Desiccated Thyroid Extract (Armour) when you order online.

    http://www.armourthyroidusa.com/

However it needs to be prescribed by a physician who must monitor your thyroid and tailor the dose accordingly.

  4. Isn’t the source of armour pork based or porcine? I understand that I may have the option to take this as a Muslim. But, what would you recommend that is not made from pork for thyroid medicine?

    • Isn’t bovine also come from the pig?
How do you find armour thyroid that is not for pig in the u.s?

  5. Please can you advise how I can arrange for Desiccated Thryoid meds. i am based in Johannesburg South Africa & have Hashimotos Disease & react badly to the Eltroxin or Euthyroid prescribed by our doctors. They do not support desiccated meds either.

  7. Hi. I live in RSA and found it difficult dealing with regular GP’s regarding hashimotos. I finally found a homeopath who assisted and prescribed desiccated thyroid. At last I am normalising and will later be assisted in further treatment.
Thank you for this helpful information.

  8. Apparently Dr Budhree at Weleda Wellness Centre in Bryanston in Gauteng, RSA has NDT. I’m looking for one in Cape Town. Currently going to a Dr Brian Emdin in Lansdowne who says he has it, but has yet to prescribe it to me. Also Vivienne at Laborie Centre in Paarl says she has it. Check out the FB page and website “Stop The Thyroid Madness”. Very helpful.

  9. Hello,
I’m so happy I found this article on a Muslim website.
Since Armour is porcine, would it be considered haram? Or would it be permissible since there is no halal alternative for dessicated thyroid? What are your thoughts on this? Pleaaaaaase someone reply. Thanks a lot

  11. Agree!
It is not just desiccated Thyroid extract, Heparin and Insulin are also derived from pig. Porcupine heart valves are used to replace human heart valve. Such is the significance of life in Islam and such flexible are the teachings in this regard!
