TUNIS — Hundreds of Muslim women gathered near Tunis Saturday to call for the return of the caliphate, the defunct Islamic system of governance which they said was the only means of guaranteeing their rights.

The members of the Hizb ut-Tahrir Party came from Islamic countries including Arab states, Indonesia and Turkey, as well as from Europe to debate the benefits of the system that disappeared nearly 90 years ago.

“This conference raises questions about the secular liberal way of life and asks whether it is a system that has succeed in securing the dignity and rights of women,” chief spokeswoman Nasrin Nawaaz of the British branch of the party told AFP.

“Muslim women are gathering together saying that we no longer want to live under secular liberal democratic systems,” she added.

“We want a new system, we want the khalifa system that historically has been tried and has succeeded in securing the rights of women.”

Nawaz said that countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran that promote themselves as Islamic states “in reality they implement nothing but the rules of dictatorship”.

  1. How will they choose their khalifa, if the voting system of liberal secular democracy is not an option?

  2. The system of Khilafat follows Prophethood according to the Holy Qur’an & aunthetic Ahadeeth, yet on one hand the mainstream muslim reject outright continuation of Prophethood and on the other they make pathetic demands for Khilafat to be reinstated. Regarding that there is no love lost between different sects of Muslims, will that ” Khalifa” be elected from one sect and obeyed by the rest?

  3. (Nawaz said that countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran that promote themselves as Islamic states “in reality they implement nothing but the rules of dictatorship”.)
    Above paragraph is absolutely true.

  4. How heart beseeching aspect. The need of a Khalifah has been being felt since long in the Ummah. In fact Muslim people are craving for it. But Alas! No matter how hard they try they can never get one. Because khilaafat for this time in Muslim Ummah was only intended By Allah on Minhaajunnabuwwah, i.e on the precept of Prophet hood.
Even if the whole Muslim world try collectively it will not be able to select or elect a Khalifa to whom all the sects may submit.
May they realize this truth and come into the Bliss of Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyyah that has been selected by Allah as He promised in the Holy Quran to keep it in righteous Muslims and as prophesied by the Holy Prophet of Islam PBUH in Hadith Daar-e-Qutani.Amen

  5. The sentiment ‘but we lack a good leader’ is widely accepted all over the Islamic world. It is also obvious in the so-called ‘Arab Spring’. The demonstrators only know what they are against but not for whom or for what they are.

No wonder. The Islamic world does have a Khalifa in Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul-Masih V. Only by accepting him can this vacuum be filled.
