The Vedanta Society of Greater Houston (VSGH) will celebrate the birth anniversary of its spiritual leader, Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886) on March 10 at its new Center, 14809 Lindita Dr., Houston, TX 77083 (near the corner of Beechnut and Highway 6). After formal worship at 10:30 am, there will be an interfaith dialogue from 4-6pm.
Shri Ramakrishna was the priest of a Kali Temple but also practiced Christianity and Islam among other faiths. He experienced firsthand what the Rg Veda , an ancient scripture of India, declared, “Truth is one; sages call it by various names.” Sri Ramakrishna affirmed that every religion has the inherent power to take its followers to the Ultimate Reality. The world’s religions are not contradictory or antagonistic to one another but complementary. No one need change one’s religion for another or persuade others to change their religion. Through both his life and teachings Sri Ramakrishna showed that it is possible to remain faithful to one’s own religion while opening one’s heart to the inspiration that comes from other faiths.
