AMMAN – Criminal Court Prosecutor Salah Taleb on Monday charged a 35-year-old man with premeditated murder in connection with the shooting death of his younger sister in Zarqa a day earlier in the latest so-called honour crime in the country, official sources said.
The suspect, who was not identified by officials, reportedly shot his 37-year-old sister five times in the chest on Sunday shortly after she was released by the administrator in Zarqa, a senior source close to the investigation said.
The suspect then headed to the nearest police station and turned himself in, claiming to have killed his sister to cleanse his family’s honour, the source told The Jordan Times.
In his initial confessions to the police and Taleb, the suspect said he “decided to kill his sister because she was involved in an illegitimate affair”.
“The victim was caught in a compromising situation with a man a few days before the incident and was handed over to her uncle on Sunday after he signed a guarantee that she would not be harmed,” the source said.
The uncle decided to hand her over to her family “thinking that everything was okay and it was safe for her to return home”, the source added.
“Shortly after the victim arrived home her brother shot her repeatedly with a gun,” the source said.
