First Gene Directly Linked to Plaque Psoriasis Identified

Rare mutations in the CARD14 gene can lead to plaque psoriasis when activated by an environmental trigger, according to the results of 2 studies (study 1, study 2) published online April 19 and in the May 4 print issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics. This is the first gene identified that is directly linked to plaque psoriasis, which accounts for 80% of all cases of psoriasis.
