As the global financial crisis began, I wrote a few articles on the subject of social changes that were in my mind the inevitable consequence of the events. [1] It is now time to consider the next act in the financial crisis, namely the “bonfire of the old”, in Western societies as they grapple between the conflicting objectives of taking care of their old populations whilst attempting to reduce the structural barriers confronting their younger members.
