Looted arms and hardened fighters returning from Libya’s internationally backed war fueled the coup d’etat in Mali this week that is threatening stability in the wider Sahara and Sahel regions. The Arab Spring has bled into Western Africa and the mercurial egomaniac who historically stepped in to mediate such deadly disputes – Muammar Gaddafi – is no longer available.
