Salamworld wants to be Muslim Facebook

In the Islamic world, rumours have been circulating for some time: a Muslim version of Facebook is coming. It is called Salamworld.com and is due to be launched during the Ramadan at the end of June. Its makers say, the site will uphold ‘family values’. Nevertheless, Salamworld will make money, just like Facebook.

According to one of the website’s makers, Russian Abdulvahit Niyazov, there is a need for a platform like this, because young Islamic people feel uncomfortable on Facebook. Mr Niyazov says Facebook has pictures of naked women and all kinds of haram (unclean) content. Salamworld is not the first Muslim alternative for Facebook. Since 2010, Muslims have been able to use al Millatfacebook, a Pakistani initiative.

Webshop
The makers of the Salamworld site see plenty of potential for profitable concepts. One of them is to enable access to a large collection of Islamic e-books and travel guides specially for Muslims. There is also a webshop selling Islamic products and services. You can even book a pilgrimage to Mecca on Salamworld as well as play educative games.
