US says poor coordination caused Mohmand massacre

WASHINGTON: The United States on Thursday offered a cautious and qualified mea culpa — laced with obdurate defence — for the 26/11 Mohmand air strike by Nato forces which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. It sought to blame the fog of war and inadequate coordination between the two sides for mistakes that led to the massacre, for which it offered “deepest regrets” that fell short of an full scale apology.

A US military investigation into the incident conceded for the first time that it bore some responsibility for the incident but at the same time maintained that American forces acted in self defense and responded ”with appropriate force” in the face of provocative firing from the Pakistani side.
