President Emeritus Ċensu Tabone, 98, and Mrs Tabone, 92, yesterday celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, saying they are still as much in love today as they were when they took their vows all those years ago. In today’s world, such a story really does warm the heart.

President emeritus Ċensu Tabone, 98, and his wife Maria née Wirth, 92, yesterday celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a thanksgiving mass at Lapsi Church in St Julian’s.

The couple celebrated with their eight children (three sons and five daughters) and in-laws, 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

They had spoken about the secrets of their lasting relationship in an interview with this newspaper in 2006, when they celebrated their 65th anniversary.

“We never go to sleep without patching up a quarrel. We promised to always give each other a kiss of love in reconciliation before sleeping. Our conditions and situations in life have changed many times over the years but our love has endured,” they said.

And their advice to everyone is to do the same.

The pair met in Marsalforn, where Mrs Tabone used to spend her summer holidays with her family and where Dr Tabone lived in Gozo. They had started going out together but did not get married until Dr Tabone graduated as a medical doctor and settled in his job.

He graduated from the University of Malta as a pharmacist in 1933 and as a medical doctor in 1937. They got married on 23 November 1941 in Gozo, where they still have a summer residence, and set up house in St Julian’s.
