One senior US Official working in counterterrorism department disclosed that there was an agreement between US President Bush and Pakistan Army Ruler Musharraf that if US forces knew where Osama was, they were going to come and get him. The Pakistanis would put up a hue and cry, but they wouldn’t stop US forces from conducting this operation. The deal was struck between the two leaders after Bin Laden escaped US forces in the mountains of Tora Bora in December, 2001. A senior Pakistani official further confirmed that though the original deal was struck under Musharraf but was renewed by the Pak Army during the “transition to democracy” – a six-month period from February 2008 when Musharraf was still president but a civilian government had been elected and Gen Kiani had held the reins of power of Pak Army. Under the terms of this deal, Pakistan would allow US forces to conduct a unilateral raid inside Pakistan in search of Bin Laden, his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and the al-Qaida No3. However both sides agreed that Pakistan would vociferously protest the incursion.
