Merkel is 1st German chancellor to visit Angola

LUANDA, Angola — German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday that her country is willing to help train Angolan soldiers for peacekeeping, a German news agency reported.

Merkel made the offer during a visit to Angola’s capital. She was the first German chancellor to visit the war-battered, oil-rich southern African country.

Merkel said “our aim is that regional conflicts can be pacified by regional troops,” news agency dapd reported. She said Germany would help train soldiers “if it is wanted.”

She also told Angolan officials that Germany would be prepared to help “with your defense efforts, for example in bolstering the navy,” dapd reported.
