1:32A video of a man confronting a woman for wearing a hijab in Canada is circulating on social media. The National Council of Canadian Muslims says the incident is one of many it frequently hears about from individuals throughout the country. The London Police Service said its hate crime unit is investigating the incident.

The London Police Service’s hate crime unit is investigating an incident involving a man who told a woman wearing a hijab that Muslims do not belong in Canada.

A video of the interaction is circulating on social media. In the video, the man tells the woman that a hijab is incompatible with Christian values.

“You’re right, I am racist,” the man said. “And I’m gonna own it.”

CBC News attempted to contact the man in the video but has not received a response.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said the woman was wearing a hijab and was with her two daughters when the interaction occurred. The organization believes the incident took place on or near Western University’s campus.

The person who sent the video to CBC News said the interaction happened Tuesday.

“This particular case had a person reflect in a very detailed and elaborate manner, the point-for-point anti-Muslim narratives that you find online,” said Steven Zhou, a spokesperson for NCCM.

“Conspiracy theory kind of narratives that Muslims are working to hollow out Canadian values, rule of law, human rights, and to replace it with something much more sinister.”

In the video, two young women who appear to be bystanders approach a man sitting in a black car. They challenge him and defend the woman filming the interaction.

“He’s being really racist towards me,” the woman filming said. “He’s saying that Muslims … we don’t belong here.”

“That’s right, they don’t belong here,” the man responds.

Zhou said this incident is one of many the organization hears about from people accross the country.

“Muslim women look over their shoulders all the time before going out,” said Zhou. “They think twice.”

The person who sent the video to CBC News said in an email that the woman who filmed the incident is shaken by what happened and wishes to remain anonymous.
