The interim Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has told Fiji Live it is the first time ID cards will be issued to voters.
He says the move will minimise fraud.
The government says officials will travel to all 1,150 election venues across the country, in what it calls the first step towards a modern electoral system.
Fiji’s leader, Frank Bainimarama, who seized power in 2006, has promised to hold elections by September 2014.
Footnote
This is a great news aimed both proper identification and to profile people all other governemmtal statistics. It is time that every Fiji citicen had his/her own ID. As a former police officer, it was very difficult to identify people unless a criminal record got created with mug shots and some basi c info.
