Prayer as Medicine for the Sick

Huff Post

In 1988 a doctor named Randolph Byrd conducted a study to determine whether or not intercessory prayers on behalf of other people were effective.

The findings were amazing. The patients who were not prayed for were nearly twice as likely to suffer complications than patients who were prayed for (Dale A. Matthews, M.D., and Connie Clark, “The Faith Factor: Proof of the Healing Power of Prayer,” New York: Penguin, 1999, p.199-200). The study seems to indicate that prayers, even by a stranger for a stranger, can help in fighting disease.

This study has spawned a great deal of criticism by academic scientists who argue that it is not sufficiently rigorous or reliable. But I am more interested in the spiritual question. From a spiritual perspective, are prayers really that powerful? Is this how prayer works?

  1. As a Ahmadi Muslim I believe in the Law of Nature and also Law of Sharia , both laws are made by God ( All-Mighty Allah). In the respect of Law of nature I take medicines or will concern a doctor if necessary and will act according to his advise. Secondly as a believer of Law of Sharia,I will pray to my Allah ( The All Mighty God) and also will write a letter to The Khalifa ( The Holly Head Of Jammat-E-Ahmaddiya) for prayers of my health. I will also request my mother and father, my brothers and sisters and will request all members of our Jammat to Pray for me.
So I have to take medicines in the respect of the Law of Nature ( This law is also made of God ) and will also pray to Allah (The God) in the respect of Law of Sharia that says the ultimate health comes from Allah and He is Allah who has given quality of cure to different medicines as medicines are made of the extracts of natural God made herbs and fruits and substances etc.
