France does not want an escalation of the row over US snooping on millions of French citizens’ telephone communications, the government’s spokesperson said Tuesday, after a breakfast meeting between US Secretary of State John Kerry and French Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius.
Fabius told Kerry that the snooping, which targeted politicians, businessman and individualswith no public profile, was “unacceptable between friends and allies”.
Kerry had earlier tried to defuse the row, assuring the US’s “old ally” that Washington is reviewing its information-gathering techniques, a message that US President Barack Obama repeated in a call to French President François Hollande.

Their drones can enter an autonomous country because they are at war in that area. They can snoop at French politicians’ private conversation, because they are in love with France.
In the early days of the internet one American internet contact told me: “Remember, to write anything on the internet, anywhere, is like shouting a secret in the middle of a railway station.” Meaning nothing is ‘secret’. I think everyone knows that by now. We have to go back to the old ‘manual courier system’ if we want to pass a message that does not get ‘snooped upon’.
