Circumambulation or Tawaf e Kaaba: Why it is “Anticlockwise?”

This is an interesting video about the harmony of circumambulation (Tawaf e Kaaba) to our universe.

Circumambulation is the act of moving around a sacred object. In Islam, circumambulation is performed around the Khana e Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction. It is also practised in various other faiths and religions including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism.

We know from the Holy Quran that “all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds” (Al-Quran 1:2)

The Holy Quran also reveals that it is not just human being but everything in the Universe which extols and glorifies Allah. ……

“the seven heavens and the earth and those that are therein extol His glory; and there is not a thing but glorifies Him with His praise; but you understand not their glorification”. (Al-Quran 17:45).

Allah commands us to glorify Him and be of those who prostrate to Him “glorify thy Lord praising Him, and be of those who prostrate themselves before Him” (Al-Quran 15-99).

This video shows how we join the heavens and earth in glorifying our Allah while circumambulating around Kaaba!

  1. The planet Earth, too, moves counter-clockwise on it’s axis and also around the sun, etc.

Therefore, when the Qur’an tells us that everything in creation has it’s own ways of worship, could this also be included as one way? And the fact that (since they have no choice other than Humans), they follow undeterred, Allah’s laws that He set them on?

    SubhanAllah!

    • Who said that it cannot be looked at from an opposite perspective? Who laid down the guidelines for the universal alignment? Who were they if not human mappers and scientists who thought that South is downwards on a map and North is upwards?

  2. Add to this the “prayer” which is in every religion.

While all other creation organize their activities with a certain regularity, it is only the human being which tries to have his own routine which is different than the rest of creation.

Religions, especially Islam, makes prayers obligatory at set timings and with regularity. First the “material part” of the human body gets into a “routine”. The “fire” in the human is cooled down just like the “planet Earth” cooled down by rotating around its axis and revolving around the sun in a routine.

It is after that cooling down that another “life form” sprouts within the material human being. That “life” is not material but in another form. The evolution process of that “life” perforce has to follow the rules of “evolution” by maintaining that “routine” of prayers. The moment that routine is disrupted, the evolution of the human being stops.

And if continued, the process continues then the journey is: from the “material state” to the “moral state” to the “spiritual state” of existence.

If taken this aspect of “motion” for the rest of Universe, one would realise that planets which are considered to be without “life” as we know, have a spirituality of which “human mind” is as yet not able to grasp.

Perhaps there is a subtle linkage beween the “material” part of the planets and stars to their “souls” which effect “life forms” on planet earth, human being included.

  3. The Earth revolves around the sun in both the clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. It is all a matter of where you place your imaginary viewpoint.

You see a clock’s arms revolving clockwise. Stand behind the clock and that rotation is reversed. Same for the Earth, you can choose to view the orbit from above the North Pole or above the South Pole, either is just as arbitrary.

We deliberately elect to consider the orbit from above the North Pole, partially because the first scientists to chart this sort of stuff lived in the north hemisphere. We also orient maps with the north at the top. From this angle the Earth revolves anticlockwise, not clockwise.

  4. Who said that it cannot be looked at from an opposite perspective? Who laid down the guidelines for the universal alignment? Who were they if not human mappers and scientists who thought that South is downwards on a map and North is upwards?
