International demand for Judicial Inquiry into the Custodial Death of Mr. Abdul Qudoos, by Police in Punjab

In his letter to Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, President of Pakistan in Islamabad, Mr. William Gomes asks the Pakistani President to conduct a judicial inquiry into the illegal detention and torture of Mr Abdul Qudoos Ahmad, and prosecute all the officials of the Chenab

Nagar police station on charges of torture and the murder. He also urges the exposure of torture cells in the police station and the suspension all the police officers of the district until the completion of the judicial inquiry. Needless to say, it is also imperative that the government ensures the safety and security of the family members and see that a proper autopsy is conducted with the assistance of forensic experts.

Re: PAKISTAN: Ahmadi leader tortured to death in police custody

Dear President of Pakistan,

Name of victim: Mr Abdul Qudoos Ahmad, a school teacher, resident of Chenab Nagar (Rabwah), Punjab province

Names of alleged perpetrators:
1. Mr. Sujhat Ali, Sub Inspector of Police
2. Mr. Manazar Ali, Sub Inspector of Police
3. Mr. Khadim Hussain, Station House Officer (SHO)
All are attached to the Chenab Nagar police station, Punjab province
4. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Chenab Nagar, Punjab province
5. District Police Officer of Chenab Nagar, Punjab province

Date of incident: 30 March 2012

Place of incident: Chenab Nagar, Punjab province

I am shocked to know that he was kept in the illegal captivity of police for 35 days during which time he was tortured without mercy. The victim was was hung upside down by his ankles for long periods. On other occasions he was forced to lay flat on his back while a heavy wooden roller, similar to those used to flatten cricket pitches, was rolled over his body. His captors stood on either side making sure he could not escape the torment. Such inhumane and merciless treatment led to multiple organ failure and other physical injuries. The aforementioned methods of torture are but a few examples of the torment inflicted on him in a demonstration of hatred against the Ahmadis by the law enforcers.

I have learned that Mr. Abdul Qudoos Ahmad (43), a well respected school teacher, belonging to the Ahmadiyya sect was tortured to death while in police custody in Chenab Nagar (the Ahmadi community refers to it by its old name of Rabwah), Punjab province. He was taken into custody by the police on 10 February 2012 and was kept in a private torture cell of the police until 26 March when his condition deteriorated due to the severe torture he endured. He remained in police custody for 46 days with any charges being laid against him and was not officially arrested. He was forced to confess to the murder of one, Muhammad Yousuf, a stamp-paper seller from the Nusrat Abad area who was murdered a few months earlier. During the illegal detention Mr. Qudoos was deprived from access to any the legal aid was not provided.

  1. its very merciless action which was taken by pakistani police…….and everybody knows very well about the behaviour of pakistani police…..and specially in the matters of ahmadis there is no justice at all in any department although they are all pakistanis as well as others and this right gives them the constitution of pakistan……..

  2. I strongly condemn the callous act of the police, deaf ear and blind eye attitude of the government, khadime aala and hazrat chief justice IMC.

  3. Another chapter of sacrifice is written in the history of believers and the example of extreme torture exercised by those (so called) Muslims about whom, Prophet of Allah Mohammad (SAW) said that the time will come when actions of (so called) Muslims will resemble that of the Jews of old times.

This horrific incident also brings back the memories of Syedna Hazrat Bilal (RA) when he was subjected to similar torture, just because he believed in the Truth.

I have no doubt in mind that these responsible savages will not only rot in hell but the world will see them perish in this very world.

  4. Muslims in Nepal: A Retrospect
    By Dirgha Raj Prasai
Nepal is the pious Hindu country in the lapse of the Himalayas, which is beautiful, quiet, the birth place of Buddha and origin of Hinduism. Lord Buddha is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu- the Hindu God. Besides being the country of Everest it is equally popular with its diverse cultural values. This is the land where civilization began and is also known as the country of ‘SANGRILA.’ Nepal is as holy place to Hindus & Buddhists, as Mecca for Muslims and Jerusalem to Jews and Christians.

Nepal is a country sandwiched between China and India. Because of its geo-political situation, Nepal’s sovereignty has always been very sensitive. Nepal is rich culturally and naturally. Our successful foreign policy would be to maintain our culture, traditions and indigenous identities to balance between China and India. Actually, Nepal is a paradise which provides calmness and rejuvenation to the mind. This lovely place is also said as the potpourri of ethnicity and has many cultural landscapes. This land of bio-diversity has so many cultural and religious landmarks that give a soothing experience to everyone. Nepal is a rich and complex mix of different cultures and traditions, melded over thousands of years into a unique whole. For the western traveler there is much that is familiar, and many surprises. Family and religion are of paramount importance, and are constantly reflected throughout the culture. Culture provides essential information on attitudes, beliefs and behavior in different countries, ensuring that you arrive at your destination aware of basic manners, common courtesies, and sensitive issues. It offers illuminating insights into the culture and society of a particular country. Nepal moves to a different rhythm than the West.

It is necessary to talk of respected immigrants Muslim people after the subject of aborigines and the indigenous tribes. Being involved in trade and commerce for three hundred years the Muslim people are immigrants. Almost, at 1343 (1400 B.S) under the leadership of Nawab Samsuddin of Bengal, 31,000 Muslim warriors attacked Lumbini, Janakpur, Panauti, and reached Kathmandu where the united Hindu forces under King Jayasthiti Malla chased them away. It is mentioned in Taleju Temple of Bhaktapur (Yogi Naraharinath) that 2,400 Muslim warriors were killed and 600 ran away. There is no other historical record of another Muslim attack after this defeat. After that Muslim attack, this pious land never fights with Muslims.
Gradually, Muslims started entering Nepal. Some of them were invited for the purpose of medicines and treatment and some of them voluntarily entered into Nepal for trading horses and medicines from Kashmir. We can see two mosques- Jame and Kashmiri near by Hindu King’s palace in Kathmandu which was erected in 1743 (1800 BS). King Prithvi Narayan Shah had visited Benaras for the devotion of Lord Vishwonath. At that time he purchased some weapons and he returned back by bringing Muslims artisans to safeguard the small Hindu Kingdoms. When Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered Kathmandu, the King had given recognition to the mosques that had already existed. Prithvi Narayan Shah had contributed the unification of Big-Nepal from Tista to Kangada. Let it be the history of East India Company’s war with Nepal where the Nepalese land was captured in1816.
After signing the Sugauli Treaty in 1857, the land from Rapti to Mahakali was lost which was again returned back latter as a “Naya Muluk. “. Rana Prime Minister Junga Bahadur invited Muslims from Lucknow to reside in Nepalgunj which was almost a forest area. So Muslims of this nation are known to be a patriotic force. When Nepal was a Hindu nation Muslims’ were not dissatisfied and who neither were been against nor will never be against the nation. Hindus had not harbored any prejudice against Muslim and they were free to recognize their religion. In the world such a harmonious co-existence between Muslim and Hindu is exemplary. However, in India Hindu and Muslim has indulged in emotional wars from the very beginning.
After unification, Nepal feared attack from the British forces. And Muslim Emperor Nawab Bajir of Lucknow pledged support to Nepal in case a war broke out between Nepal and the East India Company. Later when the Anglo-Nepal war did break out in 1815, but the Muslim Emperor Bajir Shah lent his support to the British Empire. And then, in 1857 British sought help of Nepal against Muslim empire. The PM of Nepal Junga Bahadur with a seething temper for revenge quelled the Muslim forces. British forwarded the hand of friendship and in this course returned Nepal’s land that they have previously occupied. After this, English never looked at Nepal with a wrong intention. Many people of the hilly region Brahman, Chhetrtie, Rai, Limbu, Thakali, Gurung, Tamang, Magar including Muslim have lived in the plains of Terai before Prithvi Narayan Shah’s era. Among the tribes and races, there are no prestige issues because mutuality and cordiality is the sense among the Nepalese people.
Telegraph Nepal writes- ‘History is the witness of peaceful and harmonious living of the Nepali Hindus and Muslims. Unlike India, Nepali Hindus are very much tolerant towards diverse beliefs. Nevertheless in the manner some prominent nationalist Muslim leaders are being targeted and killed in series—is the clear indication that external inimical forces want also to disturb existing religious communal harmony as they did so to Nepali politics in the recent past. These are the words of a Muslim leader who actively participated in a two hour long traffic stoppage—making mess of city traffic, organized as a mark of protest in the heart of capital Kathmandu against government’s nonchalant attitude towards bringing to book those criminals involved in the killing of community leader Faizan Ahmed (40) told in the condition of anonymity. Broad day light killings of leader Mirza Dil Shad Beg and media entrepreneur Jamim Shah and attempted murder of Yunus Ansari- another media entrepreneur right inside the guarded (?) Central prison is the indication that Nepal will soon turn into a grave yard for the Nepalese Muslim community,” the Muslim leader further commented.’

Are those who live in Madhes- Tharu, Rajbanshi, Dhimal, Muslims, Brahmins, Chhetri, Rai, Limbu, Madwadis and so on Madhesis shifting their shelters. In this land respected Janaki (Sita) born in Janakpur-Mithila Prasesh, Gautam Buddha was born and the world was illumined with his wisdom. It is said, ‘Bodhisatya Mahasatya; Swayambhu Chaitya Namanyaha’. Before India was termed as Hindusthan, the creator of this nation Prithvinarayan Shah had said- ‘Nepal is pious land. It is a right Hindusthan for all castes and 36 races.’ In such a context the aborigines, natives and immigrant nationalities of this nation must answer against the conspiracy of foreigners and Nepalese traitors who are in regime.
