  1. The trouble is common officially Muslim folks do not know much about religion, and the mullah’s livelihood is linked with how impressive he is to them. Now the Mullah cannot indulge in serious religious discussion for fear of losing, their attention and hence, them.
To be “impressive” the mullah has to pick a topic that is within their reach, sort of. Knowing that even that may not be very appealing the mullah is forced to devise tactics to keep them entertained. This seems to be one of them.
This video and many others like it remind me of street entertainers cum medicine peddlers of Karachi of days gone by (i.e. when I was young). They would often pull clever stunts to attract people.

  2. You are right. We used to called them madaries with dugdagis and monkeys or some other animals. These days so called mullahs are attracting the people by placing books on table (no one knows which are these books)and toka in hand or some thing else and with louder voice. If you minutely view the video will find few understanding how moulvi is making fool of them but still enjoying.

  3. In video what Moulvi is holding in hand. Toka in Urdu or punjabi means a sharp metal instrument to cut the things which may include meat, beaf, bones, wood and so. (One can call it as big brother of sharp knife) But how you will understand the video which might appear in strange language if you do not understand toka.

  4. Oh, I do understand a little bit of Urdu, since my mother tongue is Gujarati, and even speak a kitchen variety of the language, but, ‘toka’ was too foreign for me.

Yes, I did notice a meat cleaver in his hand, but not why he was brandishing it around. Could you please, explain that, too?

  5. Trying to answer, Raziya Mohamedali’s question:
Because he believes in co-coercion of ideas if volume of the voice does not work then this is symbolism for physical violence.

  6. That question about “Toka” solves another problem; the problem of a suitable title for the video. I think the Muslim Times should consider replacing “Moulvi TOKA” with “Cleaver brandishing Mullah” or with “Cleaver Wielding Mullah”.
It is sad to note that Islamic teachings of peace and harmony in the society have degenerated into displays of violence even at religious gatherings. But what can a common man do? Even the “thinkers” preach violence saying:
آ تجھ کو بتاتا ہوں تقدیر امم کیا ہے
شمشیر و سناں اول طاوس و رباب آخر
(Let me tell you what the destiny of nations is: initially they grow as a fighting force and degenerate when they indulge in comfortable living and merrymaking.)
Sounds very impressive and one can draw good conclusions from it but it is open to misinterpretation. Besides, the Spartans lived lives of austerity, with military discipline, ready to wield force; they went down violently.
Let me offer an alternative approach:
آ تجھ کو بتاتا ہوں تقدیر امم کیا ہے
عقل و خرد اول فتن اور فساد آخر
(Let me tell you what the destiny of nations is: They grow when they use their heads and they go down when they fall prey to intrigue and violence.)
I just pray to Allah that the Pakistanis realize the kind of poison these Mullahs are feeding them on.

  7. After explaining the logic by Zia Sahib it must be clear now why Moulvi is using the Toka. Particularly during second time when he utters the words meaning disconnecting the head and pardoning of blood etc. As for change of title is concerend let the suggested title be written in brackets for those who do not under stand what Toka is.

  8. He is representing anything but Islam. Innlillahi waa inaa ilaihi Rajioon.

God have Mercy on Muslim Ummah.Amen

  9. har (her) shakh pay uloo baitha hay
    Anjam-a- gulistan kia ho ga
On every branch owl is sitting__What would be the eventual fate of the garden (that nation)
We need to increase literacy rate and educate the public, inculcate the values of tolerance among them other wise we can not deliver them from the clutches of the Mullahs. May Allah has mercy on all of us and deliver us from the clutches of Mullahs.
    Zarif Ahmad

    • Yes, EDUCATION does cure a multitude of ills and therein lies the answer to Pakistan’s ignorant masses. There is a saying, ‘Education makes a people easy to govern, but, difficult to enslave’. It applies here.

These Maulvis will lose their hold on the ignorant public, then, Insha’Allah. Of course, education should, Insha’Allah, also give birth to courage which they will need to stand up to these crack-pots!

  10. In my third post, above, I mangled a couplet by Iqbal. It should have been:
آ تجھ کو بتاتا ہوں کہ تقدیر امم کیا ہے
شمشیر و سناں اول طاوس و رباب آخر

I am sorry and I apologize to anyone who was offended. While I am at it, let me say that sword and arrow could be used to represent struggle and hard work, my quarrel is with the symbolism which can be misconstrued. While I am at it let me do something that I offered as an alternate approach (though not a substitute for the Iqbal couplet.) It may still not rhyme, but I am no poet; just a busybody.

آ تجھ کو بتاتا ہوں کہ تقدیر امم کیا ہے
عقل و خرد اول فتنہ و فساد آخر

To end this mea culpa, let me say that I am, perhaps, not cut out for this kind of stuff. Besides I am getting old, I realize that months after the stroke that I had in September last year. So, perhaps I will make myself scarce.

    • Come on! Like the noble person that you share a common name with, never give up.

When Sir Mohammed Zafrullah Khan accepted another 8 year term at the International Court of Justice in 1963 I think he was already past 70something. One journalist asked him: “Do you really still want to serve the full term?” His answer was: “The full term, or my whole life, whatever is longer”. He served the full term…
