Blasphemy – what would Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) do?

I read the news today that a 23 year old Saudi man, Kashgari, tweeted some inappropriate comments about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).  You can find what he tweeted here.

I am saddened by Kashgari’s partial understanding of the greatness of prophet Muhammad (PBUH), because if he had understood him well, he would have not tweeted what he did.

What saddens me even more are reports like this: “MAKKAH: Imams of mosques in Makkah were unanimous in their Friday sermons on the necessity of bringing Saudi columnist and writer Hamza Kashgari to justice for making insulting comments about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on Twitter.”  ArabNews.

If Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was alive today, I wonder how he would have reacted to this.

Would he have done the same as he did to the lady who threw trash at him every day? One day when she did not throw trash at him, he went to see how was she doing and found her sick and helped her.

Would Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) react according to the following commandments of Allah (SWT):

  1. Had your Lord willed, all those on earth would have believed altogether. Would you, then, compel people, so that they become believers? 10:99
  2. You are not a taskmaster set up over them, but whoever turns away and disbelieves, Allah will punish him with the greatest torment. 88:22-24
  3. There is no compulsion in Faith 2:256

Would Prophet Muhammad’s reaction have been such that Kashgari would become a committed follower of his, instead of being killed or jailed?

What would Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ask his followers to do in such a situation?  What did he ask Jabraeel (AS) to do when he came out of taif?  Did he ask him to destroy the valley?  No.

I continue to wonder, how would he (PBUH) have reacted to an incident like this, and is our reaction aligned with his?
