At it, again …

It is almost election time, and hoping to get the votes that put them in power, Republicans and Democrats alike race to swear the oath of allegiance to Israel. One would think they are running for the presidency of this state, from the look of things!

Republican candidate Newt Gingrich might take the crown in grovelling to Israel; he recently told some US Jewish audience, the Republican Jewish Coalition, that “there was no Palestine as a state… I think we have an invented Palestinian people”.

He also pledged, if he becomes president, to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a step the US avoided taking for the longest time, hopefully aware of the implications of such misguided policy.

That would-be high-ranking American officials should fawn on Israel with a holier-than-the-pope attitude on the eve of elections is, by now, quite a familiar scene. But they are pushing things further by the day (every four years, that is), and doing it now just as the US president – and by extension the entire nation – is being snubbed by the Israeli prime minister who knows he can get away with and even win praise for doing so.
