GANANOQUE — Provincial police are describing as suspicious a $1-million fire that destroyed a house near here Monday morning.
Members of the OPP’s Leeds County Crime Unit were at the scene of the blaze on County Road 2 Tuesday and the OPP hopes anyone who may have seen anything related to the fire will give the local detachment a call.
“It may have seemed trivial at the time … but it could end up helping us out,” said Const. Sandra Barr.
Firefighters from four stations in Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township battled the blaze for about three hours Monday.
“It’s completely destroyed,” chief Gerald Bennett said.
The century-old farmhouse, at 4520 County Road 2, was fully engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived on scene shortly before noon, he said.
The residents, Murray and Alia Hogben, were not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Bennett had few details to add when reached Tuesday, but estimated the value of the home and contents at more than $1 million. The Hogbens have insurance, he said.
