of dreams …

TALESPIN, By Nickunj Malik, Jordan Times

There are some terms that we use effortlessly in daily life. Sweet dreams, for instance. As soon as we wish anyone goodnight, we usually follow it up with this further expression. We do it automatically, even without pausing to examine the phrase.

Sweet dreams, one assumes, lead to restful slumber. But do they really?

Do dreams help one get a peaceful sleep or do they act as a deterrent to a good night’s rest?

Does the sequence of events we see with our eyes closed relax us, or make us tense? Does it have any significance to our general well-being?

What exactly is a dream?

“A dream is a series of perceptions or images experienced during sleep. Some societies believe that a person’s soul never sleeps, and that while the body rests, the soul departs to have adventures of its own,” says Rachael Ninsiima in the July 6, 2011, edition of The Observer.

NOTE BY THE EDITOR: In a way the article is interesting, however, as it is published in Jordan, a country with a Muslim population, it is surprising that not a single sentence refers to Islamic Dream Interpretation. Well, see our other articles on that subject.

  1. what the author did not say in his articles (and should have said):

Abu Hurayrah narrated Muhammad (S) said, “There are three types of dreams: a righteous dream which is glad tidings from Allah, the dream which causes sadness is from Shaitan, and a dream from the ramblings of the mind.”(Sahih Muslim)

We can see true dreams are from Allah Ta’aala as Muhammad (S) said, “True dreams are from Allah, and bad dreams are from Shaitan.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

True dreams are more likely to happen to those who are truthful in their lives as Muhammad (S) said, “Those of you with the truest dreams will be those who are most truthful in speech” (Sahih Muslim)

Good dreams are also from Allah Ta’aala. Prophet Muhammad (S) said, “If anyone of you has a dream that he likes then it is from Allah. He should thank Allah for it and narrate it to others.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari) Good deeds consist of people doing Halaal (lawful) acts.
