What a world it would be if this hadith, correlated with the Golden Rule which is “do as to others what you want to yourself, Do unto others as you would have them do to you was truly lived and fully applied. Imagine us all loving for our brothers and sisters what we love for ourselves.
Wishful thinking? No. It is faithful thinking.
“O believers! Why do you say what you do not do? It is most odious in Allah’s sight that you should say that which you do not do.” [Qur’an, 61: 2-3]
The humanity of Islam is reflected in this hadith, a most eloquent summary of how a Muslim is supposed to conduct himself, or herself, with others. Fulfilling this condition, loving for the other what one loves for oneself, to be fully a believer is not restricted to only fellow Muslims but applies to all of humanity.
