Pope Benedict XVI stated that he is “fully aware of the gravity of this gesture.”
The Vatican on Monday confirmed reports published by respected Italian media that Pope Benedict XVI of Germany would step down from his position on Feb. 28.
In a statement, the pope, who is 85 years old, said his strength was no longer adequate to continue in office due to his advanced age. He also stated that he is “fully aware of the gravity of this gesture.
Benedict is the first pope to resign since Celestine V., who voluntarily abdicated the papacy just months after he became the leader of the Catholic Church in 1294.
A German government spokesman said he was “moved” by news of the pope’s resignation, and Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to respond later in the day.

One should remain bit opend minded about all the religions. Once I read some where that 2nd Khalifa (RA) studied the election of Papacy prior to drafting the rules and regualtions of Khilafat Committee of AMJ. If any one can throw more light on it.
