Did Adam Start Out in Paradise? As in THE Paradise?

It should be understood that none of the notes or arguments I present are of my own making and most are a translation, summary, and/or gist of writings of various holy people. And all real arguments originate from God through His Word: the Quran. So is the case here where I present my arguments as rough translation of a passage found in Tafseer-e-Kabeer.

The verse [2:31] “… I am about to place a vicegerent in the earth …” proves that Hazrat Adam was born to this world. The view that he was created in that Paradise that humans are to enjoy after death is wrong. It is strange that while Allah states that He is going to create a Khalifa on the Earth but some say that Hazrat Adam was kept in Jannat (paradise جَـنَّةَ).And the Quran clearly states that in the paradise of afterlife that [52:24] “There they will pass from one to another a cup wherein is neither levity nor sin.” Meaning that they would be free of error but in the paradise of Adam Satan entered and made Adam commit a deed that was against God’s orders. And in the Quran it is stated about the paradise of afterlife that [15:49] “Fatigue shall not touch them there, nor shall they ever be ejected therefrom.” but Adam was ejected from his paradise. And in the Quran it is stated that [41:32]”… therein you will have all that you will ask for” but in the paradise ofAdam, he was expelled for fulfilling his desire to go near the tree.

And for the paradise of the afterlife those entering it will say [39:75] “… making our abode in the Garden wherever we please.” … but regarding the paradise of Adam it is said [2:36] “… but approach not this tree, lest you be of the wrongdoers.” forbidding him to go wherever he pleased. To summarize, the Quranic sketch of the paradise of the hereafter is very different to that of the paradise of Adam.

And the use of the word Jannah (literally meaning Garden) to name Adam’s residence (2:35) should not confuse people into thinking he was in the paradise of the afterlife. The same word has been used several times in the Quran not to mean the paradise of the afterlife (25:9; 17:92; 18:35).

So the conclusion of three posts Adam was the first representative (caliph) of God on Earth and nowhere does the Quran claim he was the first human being. Nor that he lived in the paradise of the afterlife. Nor that we did not evolve into the best beings from worse beings. Rather, the Quran supports our evolution and that many a human existed at the time of Adam. The Quran states our creation from salsaalin-kal-fakhkhaar. And I completely fail to understand how any honest-minded individual could continue to reject the truth of this book that is the Holy Quran: the real Word of God and the religion that is Islam.

  1. Exactly. Well done.Jazaak’Allaho Khairah.
I remember that once someone was discussing the same
topic with me and was insisting that Adam was the very first man according to the Holy Quran, as Allah said to the angels That He is going to create Adam.I do not know how but it suddenly striked my mind, I said, yes and the angels replied O God are you going to create someone who will do bloodshed on the earth? Please tell me how many people did Prophet Adam kill to soak the earth with bloodshed?
She was stunned. I said then it must be meant that God was informing the Angels about the Human race that He was intending to create.
Moreover the word Messenger, Prophet or Nabi in Arabic have certain meanings related to other human kind. A messenger is sent to the people, A Prophet is makes prophecies by Allah’s revelation, so is Nabi, which means the person who gives you divine news. If there was no other man to whom did he convey the message or gave the news?
Just a little common sense is needed. Adam was the first highly intellectual man of his times.
Adam is not only a first name but also means a race. Humankind.

  2. Refutation of those who believe in human evolution
It’s explicitly mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah that Adam is the first human being and thus refuting human evolution.
“It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her in love” (7:189).
From these two individuals, generations of human beings have inhabited the earth. “Oh humankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honoured among you in the sight of Allah is the one who is the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).” (49:13).
And “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.”But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, “Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal.”And he swore [by Allah ] to them, “Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors.”So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?” They said, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”[ Allah ] said, “Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time.” [7:19 -24]
The above verses clearly states that Allah created Adam from clay in Paradise. Then Adam and eve were sent to earth. Thus there is no human evolution.
“O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.” [4:1]
“Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.” [32:7,8]
The above verses clearly state that Adam was created from clay and that he was not born nor Adam was from a biological mating nor evolved from previous creatures.
He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate… [39:6]
Prophet stated that Allah the Most High created Adam and He created Eve from his short rib. [Sunan Ibn Majah]
Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that Prophet said; “Eve was created from Adam’s shortest left rib when he was sleeping in paradise and then she was clothed with flesh. Adam named her hawwa as she was created from Adam and he was a living being.” [Ibn Ishaq & Ibn Kathir]
Ibn Umar said that Adam and eve descended to earth from paradise and were descended on safa and marwa. [Ibn Abi Hatim]
The above narrations explicitly prove that Adam and eve were created in paradise and that Adam has no parents thus the first human. Then they were sent to earth.
Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari that the Messenger of Allah said: “Indeed Allah Most High created Adam from a handful that He took from all of the earth. [Tirmidhi]
As the Qur’an at another place (Aal Imraan 3: 59) tells us that Adam was directly produced from clay (earth) and was not born to a father and a mother. “Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, “Be,” and he was.”[3:59]
In another verse Almighty Allah Proclaims:
“Allah made all things He created excellent; and He began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his offspring from the extract of base fluid; then He fashioned and breathed into him of His Spirit; and gave you hearing and sight and the faculty of inferring. And yet how little are the thanks you offer!” (Al-Quran, ch 32:7-9)
The above verses clearly prove that Adam was created from clay and he was not born to any parents or biological species thus negating human evolution.
Those deviant sects who believe in human evolution clearly contradict the Quran and Sunnah. They claim that all verses and hadith regarding creation of Adam is metaphor. But this assumption is wrong as Allah says that the Quran is clear and plain book. Also the Quran uses many linguistic manner and adjectives and nouns that explicitly state that Adam was the first human being created from dust and that humanity come from him. Therefore the Quran and Sunnah are so explicitly vivid about the creation of Adam from clay in heaven and his wife from him.
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book and has not made therein any deviance. [18:1]
[He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward. [18:2]
This (Quran) is a clear insight and evidence for mankind, and guidance and a mercy for people who have Faith with certainty. [45:20]

All praises and glory to Allah! Indeed Allah is most knowledgeable of His creation and is capable of clearly explaining His Quran than His creation!

  3. Parvez: With your taking everything literally (such as for instance that Prophet Isa (as) went to heaven in his earthly body) you encourage many persons who think logically to leave Islam altogether. Thanks to Allah that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community provides logical explanations and interpretations of these and all other suras of the Holy Quran. (same with your explanation that Adam was the first human. He was supposed to have lived 6000 years ago while the human race exists for hundreds of thousands of years). (or millions…)

  4. no where in the quran does it state that Adam was on earth 6000 yrs ago. just ur misunderstanding of islam.

y would muslims leave islam just by believeing that isa was raised up alive?? all the classical scholars believed in his ascension.

not to mention the fact that islam proclaims belief in hereafter, revelations, jinns, angels and many other aspects beyond logic and science.

Prophet isa ibn maryam was raised up alive and that he will come back again. the prophet (saw) stated clearly that isa ibn maryam will come again before the hour.

” And (remember) when Allah said: “O `Isa! I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify ﴿save﴾ you from those who disbelieve, and I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve till the Day of Resurrection. ” [3:55]

Al Hasan reports that Ibn mas’ud said “Allah raised `Isa while he was asleep.” [tafsir ibn kathir and ibn abi hatim]

“And because of their saying, “We killed Al-Masih `Isa, son of Maryam, the Messenger of Allah,” but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared as that to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not.) (158. But Allah raised him up unto Himself. And Allah is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise.) (159. And there is none of the People of the Scripture, but must believe in him, before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.” [4:157 – 159]

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Ibn `Abbas 9ra) reported that the prophet (saw) said, “Just before Allah raised `Isa to the heavens, `Isa went to his companions, who were twelve inside the house. When he arrived, his hair was dripping water and he said, `There are those among you who will disbelieve in me twelve times after he had believed in me.’ He then asked, `Who volunteers that his image appear as mine, and be killed in my place. He will be with me (in Paradise)’ One of the youngest ones among them volunteered and `Isa asked him to sit down. `Isa again asked for a volunteer, and the young man kept volunteering and `Isa asking him to sit down. Then the young man volunteered again and `Isa said, `You will be that man,’ and the resemblance of `Isa was cast over that man while `Isa ascended to heaven from a hole in the house. When the Jews came looking for `Isa, they found that young man and crucified him. Some of `Isa’s followers disbelieved in him twelve times after they had believed in him. They then divided into three groups. One group, Al-Ya`qubiyyah (Jacobites), said, `Allah remained with us as long as He willed and then ascended to heaven.’ Another group, An-Nasturiyyah (Nestorians), said, `The son of Allah was with us as long as he willed and Allah took him to heaven.’ Another group, Muslims, said, `The servant and Messenger of Allah remained with us as long as Allah willed, and Allah then took him to Him.’ The two disbelieving groups cooperated against the Muslim group and they killed them. Ever since that happened, Islam was then veiled until Allah sent Muhammad .” This statement has an authentic chain of narration leading to Ibn `Abbas, and An-Nasa’i narrated it through Abu Kurayb who reported it from Abu Mu`awiyah. [tafsir ibn kathir]

Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,”By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the son of Maryam (`Isa) will shortly descend among you as a just ruler, and will break the cross.” Abu Hurayrah then said, “Read if you will (And there is none of the People of the Scripture, but must believe in him, before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.)” Muslim also recorded this Hadith.

Also a hadith in musnad ahmad reported by ibn mas’ud that clearly proves that isa was raised up alive into the heaven. the prophet (saw) met isa during the ascension and isa said that he will go return to earth to kill the dajjal and preach Islam.

Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,
“How will you be when Al-Masih, son of Maryam (`Isa) descends among you while your Imam is from among yourselves.” Imam Ahmad and Muslim also recorded this Hadith.

Imam Ahmad and abu dawud recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Prophet said; “The Prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one. I, more than any of mankind, have more right to `Isa, son of Maryam, for there was no Prophet between him and I. He will descend, and if you see him, know him. He is a well-built man, (the color of his skin) between red and white. He will descend while wearing two long, light yellow garments. His head appears to be dripping water, even though no moisture touched it. He will break the cross, kill the dajjal in palestine, perform hajj and preach islam. Isa will remain for forty years and then will die, and Muslims will offer the funeral prayer for him. ”

Refutation of those who disbelieve in miracles
Chapter 13 verse 38: “And it was not for a messenger to come with a sign except by permission of Allah. For every term is a decree.”

The Quran informs us about many miracles/evidences (aya/beyyinat) given to previous messengers, as extraordinary evidences for their extraordinary claims. However, many dogmatic sceptics or dogmatic followers of a particular teaching always managed to find excuses to blind themselves to those evidences and are too embarrassed to believe in miracles even though they believe in the hereafter, angels, jinns and revelations. They considered the miracles given to prophets to be magic, tricks, illusions or mythology. Some sects, perhaps because of their lack of appreciation of God’s power, tried very hard to deny the existence of miracles; they tried to transform them into natural events, or symbolic statements. Those who believe in the Quran will have no problem in accepting the examples of miracles given in the Quran. Miracles remove the doubts of those who sincerely seek for truth, and strengthen those who already acknowledged the message of Allah.

The purpose of the miracles mentioned in the Quran makes sense: to support their missions in their lifetime and to show us the ultimate goals of scientific and technological progress, and to inspire us to repeat them by acquiring the knowledge of divine laws embedded
    in nature.

The Quran repeatedly informs us that Allah does not change His sunnah (law); and sending messengers with supporting miracles/signs has been God’s law.
Below is a list of miracles/signs mentioned in the Quran:

    • Some of the Children of Israel are resurrected on
    Earth after being killed (2:56).
    • Moses causes 12 springs to gush forth (2:60).
    • A man dies and is resurrected after 100 years (2:259).
    • Abraham kills four birds and brings them back
    to life (2:260).
    • Zechariah’s wife gives birth while infertile (3:40).
    • Mary gives birth while being a virgin (3:47).
    • Jesus heals the blind, lepers (3:49).
    • Jesus raises the dead (3:49).
    • Controllers descend to fight alongside the
    prophet (3:125).
    • God speaks to Moses (4:164).
    • Jesus brings down a feast from heaven (5:112).
    • Moses turns his staff into a serpent (7:107).
    • Moses’ hand becomes pure white (7:108).
    • Abraham’s wife gives birth while beyond menstruation (11:72).
    • “(Yusuf said); Take this, my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father; he will become seeing. And bring me your family, all together.” [12:93]
    • The sleepers of the cave survive 309 years in
    sleep (18:25).
    • Jesus speaks from birth (19:29).
    • Abraham survives being burned alive by the fire
    turning cold (21:69).
    Solomon commands the winds (21:81).
    • Moses parts the sea and saves the Children of
    Israel (26:63).
    • Solomon speaks to the birds (27:16).
    • Solomon moves a palace across time and space (27:40).
    The moon was split [54:1]

thus there are many miracles in islam. its a great shame that ahmadis disbleive in miracles and thus reject many verses of the Quran.
