UK: Union leader calls for Olympics to be targeted

Workers should target the Olympics as part of their campaign against the Government’s spending cuts, Len McCluskey, the leader of Britain’s largest union has said.

Mr McCluskey, the general secretary of Unite – Labour’s largest donor – said exploiting the games would be justified. “If the Olympics provide us with an opportunity, then that’s exactly one that we should be looking at,” Mr McCluskey told the Guardian. His remarks came as the RMT transport union announced that it was planning to hold a strike ballot among tube workers after rejecting the offer of a £500 Olympics bonus. But Mr McCluskey was unrepentant over his readiness to threaten the showpiece event, which will see the Olympics return to Britain for the first time since 1948. “The attacks that are being launched on public sector workers at the moment are so deep and ideological that the idea the world should arrive in London and have these wonderful Olympic Games as though everything is nice and rosy in the garden is unthinkable.”
