White House defends apology for Quran burning

The White House defended President Obama’s apology to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the burning of Qurans in Afghanistan in the face of criticism from Republicans Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Friday that Obama thought an apology to Karzai was appropriate and said the president believed extending an olive branch was in the best interest of servicemembers and U.S. civilians serving in Afghanistan, which has seen a spike in violence — including what might have been a retaliatory killing of two U.S. troops — in response to the Quran burnings.
