Orthodox iconoclast

In Blu Greenberg’s dream world, everyone appreciates what a tremendous democracy Israel is. They marvel at how inclusive a religion Judaism is.

But then this woman, who is as famous for her book How to Run a Traditional Jewish Household as she is her work as founding president of the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance (JOFA), wakes up to see a New York Times front-page story about a woman whose estranged husband refuses to grant her a religious divorce.

She hears of rabbis unwilling to allow women to carry the Torah or say Kaddish for their loved ones. And she learns of yet another incident in Israel that taints its image before the world.

This mother of four, grandmother of 21, has spent her life fighting perceived wrongs, and now in her mid-seventies, isn’t pausing. Earlier this month, she was visiting scholar at Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah in Potomac for the ninth Herbert Lieberman Memorial Shabbaton, where she spoke on the mikvah and the agunah, or chained woman, problem. She also did a reading of her book, King Solomon & The Queen of Sheba, for children.
