Switzerland: Every second youth believes in a ‘higher power’

Six percent of the 15- to 25-year old attend a weekly religious service.

Young persons in Switzerland remain faithful to the country’s churches, but seldom actually attend a church.

58 percent of the Youth of Switzerland belief in a higher power. Although 73 percent officially belong to a Christian religious community, only 43 percent say that a God exists, 29 percent deny a higher power or the existence of God. This is the result of a youth barometer of the Swiss Credit Bank. It is based on a survey of 1012 young persons aged between 16 and 25 year all over Switzerland, carried out between March and May this year.

Americans have more believers.

The study also shows: Young persons in the USA and Brazil, two countries, where Credit Swiss also carried out a survey, are much more believing. In Brazil 88 percent of the Youth believe in God, although only 76 percent call themselves Christian. In the USA the figure is 69 percent. Accordingly young Americans or Brazilians attend churches more frequently than the Swiss of the same age group. Here only 6 percent of the questioned attend at least once weekly a Church, Synagogue, Mosque or Temple. Four to six times less than in the Americas.

The regular attendents of prayer places in Switzerland are nearly exclusively members of free churches – 54 percent of them go at least once a week to a church – or they belong to non christian religions (6 percent), whereby the latter could not be properly analyzed due to statistical reasons. Of the young protestant Church members none of the Youth go to church on a weekly basis, of the Catholics only one in fifty.

  1. 43 percent say a God exists, 29 percent they he does not. That leaves 28 percent who have no opinion or do not know. Or 57 percent either say that God does not exist or are not sure about it (or do not care).

Only 6 percent attend regular weekly religious services, mainly non-members of the two large churches Protestant and Catholic Christians. (Muslims included).

What a challenge for a believer!
