Growth is a ‘challenge and an opportunity’ UN says, as activists campaign for easier access to family planning tools.
The United Nations commemorates World Population Day against the backdrop of an upcoming landmark event: global population hitting the seven billion mark by late October this year.
Though all 7 Billion people could fit in Los Angeles standing shoulder to shoulder! The National Geographic states it’s balance we need and not space.
According to current projections, and with some of the world’s poorest nations doubling their populations in the next decade, the second milestone will be in 2025 when the global population will reach eight billion.
Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), said seven billion represents a challenge, an opportunity and a call to action.
On World Population Day, July 11, he launches a campaign called “7 Billion Actions”.
“It will engage people on what it means to live in a world with seven billion people and encourage action on issues that affect all of us,” he said.

Islam agrees with the preventative measure such as family planning. However God holds life very precious and tells us not to worry about the sustenance of life. The Holy Qur’an states clear guidelines for individuals as well as the states.
“You kill not your children for fear of poverty — it is We Who provide for you and for them — and that you approach not foul deeds, whether open or secret; and that you kill not the life which Allah has made sacred, save by right.” (Al- Qur’an 6-152)
“And when he is in authority, he runs about in the land to create disorder in it and destroy the crops and the progeny of man; and Allah loves not disorder”. (Al-Qur’an 2-206)
It was intresting to watch the vedio. True no one should be killed for fear of hunger. However the plight of human beings what I have seen in Africa, Asia and Central Europe calls for some planning to control the population. Resources viz-a-viz consumers need attention. Khalifatul Masih IV (RA) explained this verse in detail and called for use of mind and rationality in the field of population growth.
