Recently a lot of research has been coming out about what really makes us happy. I have seen TED talks and documentaries on Netflix on happiness. Time and time again the results are the same. Although we may seem to think that our happiness depends on our income, socioeconomic status, employment status, gender, age or health, it turns out that these factors are just a small portion of our overall happiness.
Money only matters until we have enough to cover our basic survival. But true happiness comes from our relationships with the people around us. How our society is set up has a strong influence. There are societies where people are living long healthy lives because they have a society that is interdependent and full of strong healthy relationships. Similarly, other cultures that favor work over relationships, suffer from high stress and suicidal rates, much less happiness, and greatly decreased health.
