I remember waking up in bed, one strange morning, or at least my eyes and brain turned on and started processing. But my body was frozen. I couldn’t move not even a finger. I wasn’t being restrained by anything. It was like the on/off switch that gave me control over my body had been flipped to “off.” I had no physical control over my body. I could hear and see but could not move at all. This lasted only a minute but felt like eternity.
This is not my story but a typical account of sleep paralysis that any of my patients in my sleep disorders practice could offer me. It affects almost 6 % of the population at some point in their life.
Many religions and cultures believe, or once believed, that what is now known as sleep paralysis was a form of physical contact with demons or Jinns.
Historically speaking, in the medieval societies, belief in Jinns, demons and witches was almost universal and was the explanation for many a neurologic or psychiatric maladies.
Generally what are called Jinns in the Muslim societies are called demons in the West, with some subtle differences in the detail.
One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights, from the first English language edition (1706), which rendered the title as The Arabian Nights’ Entertainment.
The work was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators, and scholars across West, Central, South Asia and North Africa.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica:
Jinni, plural Jinn, also called Genie, Arabic Jinni, in Arabic mythology, a supernatural spirit below the level of angels and devils. Ghul (treacherous spirits of changing shape), ifrit (diabolic, evil spirits), and sila (treacherous spirits of invariable form) constitute classes of jinn. Jinn are beings of flame or air who are capable of assuming human or animal form and are said to dwell in all conceivable inanimate objects—stones, trees, ruins—underneath the earth, in the air, and in fire. They possess the bodily needs of human beings and can even be killed, but they are free from all physical restraints. Jinn delight in punishing humans for any harm done them, intentionally or unintentionally, and are said to be responsible for many diseases and all kinds of accidents; however, those human beings knowing the proper magical procedure can exploit the jinn to their advantage.[i]
Such beliefs are common place even today. A self-report questionnaire was given to a convenience sample of Muslims aged 18 years and over (n=111). The majority of the sample believed in the existence of Jinn, black magic and the evil eye and approximately half of them stated that these could cause physical and mental health problems and that these problems should be treated by both doctors and religious figures.[ii]
Most believing Christians do believe in demons as the belief in God and angels is tied with demons, as the Bible frequently mentions demons and exorcisms and present day commentaries or exegesis take the stories literally. There are scores of mention of demons in the Bible. For example we read:
On another occasion, a man knelt before Jesus, saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son,’ he said. ‘He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.’ ‘O unbelieving and perverse generation,’ Jesus replied, ‘how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.’ Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment. (Matt 17:15-18)
And again:
That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. (Mark 1:32-34)
So the writer of Gospel of Mark not only believes in demons but also that demons knew the identity of Jesus, which he did not want revealed and influenced the demons not to speak.
Exorcism is relatively common in Catholic societies. The exorcism of persons possessed by demons is carefully regulated by canon law in the Roman Catholic church, and the elaborate rite is contained in the Roman ritual.[iii]
In a recent study in Switzerland, the author conducted a systematic investigation of the prevalence of demons, in 343 mainly Protestant out-patients of a psychiatric clinic in Switzerland, who described themselves as religious. Of these, 129 (37.6 per cent) believed in the possible causation of their problems through the influence of evil spirits, labeling this as ‘occult bondage’ or ‘possession.’ One hundred and four of these patients (30.3 per cent) sought help through ritual ‘prayers for deliverance’ and exorcism.[iv]
In this context, both in the East and the West, it is a great service of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to humanity that they have freed religion from such Jinns, demons and exorcisms.
There are several mentions of Jinns in the Holy Quran and actually a chapter is titled Jinn. But, the devil is in the details. Who are the Jinns?
Khalifatul Masih II, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mehmood Ahmed, who led the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community from 1914-1965, gave several reasons why Jinns are not the demons or the ghosts of popular imagination, in his commentary of Sura Hijr, the fifteenth chapter of the Holy Quran. I will mention only two here for the sake of example.
He says that Jinns in the Holy Quran mean foreigners or aliens, for example, we read in the Holy Quran, “And of the Jinn were some who worked under him (Solomon), by the command of his Lord. … They made for him what he desired; palaces and statues, and basins like reservoirs, and large cooking vessels fixed in their places.” (Al Quran 34:13-14) When we try to find out, who were these Jinns that built palaces for the Prophet Solomon, we find in the Bible that he had asked foreign kings to send him engineers for this purpose.[v] In the same chapter we read, “Solomon took a census of all the foreigners residing in Israel, after the census his father David had taken; and they were found to be 153,600. He assigned 70,000 of them to be carriers and 80,000 to be stonecutters in the hills, with 3,600 foremen over them to keep the people working.”[vi]
In Hadith we find mention that Jinns also believed in the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace be on him, but, when we try to understand these Hadith in the light of the Quran, we have no choice, but to understand Jinns to be some hidden groups of men, who did not reveal their identity for different considerations. For example, in the Holy Quran we read, “Say, ‘O mankind! truly I am a Messenger to you all from Allah.” (Al Quran 7:159 ) Khalifatul Masih II argues that if Jinns were a separate species, different from the humans the Holy Quran should have said, “Say, ‘O mankind and Jinns! truly I am a Messenger to you all from Allah.” So, many a use of the term Jinn in the Quran is for humans of one description or the other.
Jinn according to the Islamic tradition may also mean bacteria, which may cause disease or even archaebacteria, which emerged at least 3.5 billion years ago and live in environments that resemble conditions existing when the earth was young, which may have role in evolution of life on our planet, but, that is a subject for another day.
According to a 2009 Harris Poll of 2,303 adult Americans, when people are asked to “Please indicate for each one if you believe in it, or not,” the following results were revealing:1
82% believe in God
72% believe in angels
71% believe in survival of the soul after death
60% believe in the devil
42% believe in ghosts
23% believe in witches
As the Christian children grow up in the Western cultures, they learn that Santa Claus is only make belief and of only some historical significance, in the same vein, as the human society is maturing in our global village, we are increasingly realizing that Jinns and demons, in their influence on human minds and human lives, are only relics of the past and a result of lack of precise understanding, no one needs exorcism today.
Those who are suffering, only need physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists and better theologians.
Belief in Transcendent beings, who are not confirmed by our five senses and are beyond time, space and matter, God of the Abrahamic faiths, angels and Jinns and demons in the popular imagination, has to be based on sound reasons and proofs and such beliefs need to demonstrate utilitarian value or some benefit for human existence.
Belief in Personal God, who grants us our earnest prayers through the agencies of angels brings peace and serenity to our hearts and souls, but, a belief in malevolent Jinns, for which we do not find any good evidence, only brings chaos, irrationality, disease and suffering.
We can choose what we believe in and we have the choice to base it on reason and rationality.

The writing of the Khalifat ul Masih II that Jinns in the Holy Quran mean foreigners or aliens. That is perfectly true and best description. There is no need to look for an other explanation for Jinn.
If we use local for “Ins” and foreigner for Jinn, in the Quranic verses, the meaning becomes perfectly clear.
In another book, hazrat sahib Rz.a. i.e. Khalifat ul Masih II has described the Jinn as prehistoric MANKIND who used to live in the caves and did not prefer to come out to live in the open at the time (and advice) of Adam a.s. That is decsribed in his Urdu book “Sair e Roohaani”.

The fire you’ve mentioned in your comment and which is also mentioned in the Holy Qur’an does not have a literal explanation.
Our Holy Book does not indulge in fairy tales and impossibilities and Mankind has been called the highest of His Creation, therefore, if Jinns (as you interpret them), would also have been mentioned along with humans as a different type of creation.
Jinns are humans of a certain type of disposition and of course, they too (being human), have a choice to follow good or bad.
Remember, in the Qur’an when Allah tells the angels to bow to Adam? There He never made mention of them bowing to Jinn, too. That is because there is only ONE species of Creation with a Free Will – Mankind. Jinns are NOT mentioned as being another Creation or having free will. This is ALL one species with different qualities.
Please, read our literature to get rid of these strange beliefs that you seem to have. Don’t take everything you read in the Qur’an and Hadith literally, please. Apply your reasoning as the Holy Book would have you do.
Please look up the experience of Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad RA Khalifa tul Masih ur Rabeh. Before making such conclusions.

jinn is created from fire why would it be metaphoricall. in ch 55 quran says ;
“He created man from clay like [that of] pottery.And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.” [55 : 14-15]
the quran makes a clear difference between humanity and jinns.
also the ahadith is clear that the jinns were created before human beings, again proving that jinn is a different creation.
‘A’isha reported that Allah’s Messenger () said:
The Angels were born out of light and the Jinns were born out of the spark of fire and Adam was born as he has been defined (in the Qur’an) for you (i. e. he is fashioned out of clay). [saheeh muslim]
In a hadith recorded by Imam Muslim, the companion Ibn Mas‘ud reported: ‘The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: ‘There is not one of you who does not have a jinnī appointed to be his constant companion (qarīn).’ They said, ‘And you too, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘Me too, but Allah has helped me and he has submitted, so that he only helps me to do good.”
In Sūrat Al-Jinn, verses 8–10, Allah reveals concerning the jinn how they used to take stations in the skies to listen to divine decrees passed down through the ranks of the angels, but those who attempt to listen now (during and after the revelation of the Qurʾan) shall find fiery sentinels awaiting them.

even ibn taymiya the reformer of 7 th century clearly states that jinns are different from human beings and the jinns also have limited free will.
there are also hadith that states that some jinns can fly. this again proves that jinn are different from human beings.
Yes, there is plenty of symbolic things mentioned in the Quran. the quran calls some persons as deaf and dumb. But it well known that they are normal hearing ans speaking people.
The Quran also calls some people as dead. But they are alive.
In chapter 17, verse 73, in Quran it is said “Those who were blind in this (world) they will be blind in last (next world) and (they will be) much more misled away from right path.”
Parvez sahib should tell if the physically blind of this world, in this life, will they be blind in next life also??
In the Quran, it is written, “And we created Man from haste (hurry?). See below: 21:38.
Man is made (created) of haste. I will certainly show you My Signs but ask Me not to hasten.
Will Parvez sahib please consider how man is made of haste? The word “Khalaq” is present in that verse.
Next: Jinn have free will. Jinn live and die. Jinn have no knowledge of the unseen. Jinn are accountable on judgement day. They make disturbance in the land and even kill. They eat and drink. They burn fires for cooking.
In Sura Jinn, it is informed that a group of (foreigners) came to outskirts of Madina to get nowledge of Islam. The prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. secretly went out of the city to meet them and preached to them. They believed in the prophet s.a.w.s. and went back to their own country.

In the last verse, the word MEN (Arabic Rijaal) is used for the Jinn. It says “some MEN from among the Jinn,”
Will any one deny that the Jinn are also MEN?
Let us all get guidance from the Quran. Allah guides those who do not reject His teachings.
there are symbolic and metaphoric verses in the quran. such as the disbelievers being spiritually blind. regarding man being haste – it refers to those humans who are ungrateful and compalin too much when something they dislike happens to them and them being boastful when something they like happens to them.

There were Jinn in the employment of Hazrat Sulaiman a.s. They were foreigners employed to serve Sulaiman a.s. The contract of service was in the name of Sulaiman a.s. to serve Sulaiman.
It is reported in Quran that when Sulaiman a.s. died he was standing with the support of a walking stick. It was up in the balcony of palace.
The Jinn used to see him standing there so they kept on working for long time.
Then it is said that an insect was eating the stick. When stick was eaten Sulaiman a.s. fell down.
Then the Jinn said, “Oh we have been suffering. We do not have the knowledge of Ghaib (unseen). Had we the knowledge of the unseen we would not have suffered so much..”
parvez sahib, these were foreign technical workers serving Sulaiman a.s. Haikal Sulaimani was being built. Work was not complete and Sulaiman a.s. died.
Can you explain what happened and why were the Jinn in difficulty and who they were? The last chapter of the Quran is also discussing the Jinn. That is all foreign elements who try to mislead the believers.
some jinns were serving sulayman (as). the jinns are seperate creation, one of the jinn got the throne of a queen very quikly and thus not possible for any human beings to do at that time.
no foreign people are created from fire unless the ahmadis know of some people that are created from fire?!
I regularly kick school Jinns about. I always work late at my school and I’m so scary they stay clear of me.

Jinn literally means anything which has the connotation of concealment, invisibility, seclusion and remoteness. Therefore many things (including bacteria and viruses) can be classified as Jinn.

For example:
Jaan for snake, Jenine for Fetus, Majnoon for Possessed one, Jannah for concealed land and many others.

ibn taymiya aand suyuti (7th and 9th reformer respectively) agreed that jinn is different creation from humans. also they both stated in the book that i linked before that jinn mentioned in the quran are not human beings nor bacteria.
If we cannot see Jinn with our naked eyes, how can we experience them or confirm in any way that they exist?

We are all trying to understand the Holy Quran and interpret, what it is saying. Heaven and hell are in the hereafter, but, you are bringing Jinn in this very life in this very world.
The Prophets have revelations and we have a small equivalent, in dreams that all of us experience and some have true dreams, as well, so we can understand the concept of prophethood. But, your Jinns have no trace except in ignorance of past and medieval societies.

That is true. It helps to understand that Jinn were those men who used to live in the caves. In fact all men in early age used to live in the caves. They did not build houses. Those caves have been discovered in France and other places.
Their living in caves was a matter of concealment. They were hidden. The fires they burnt and the bones of animals they ate have also been discovered.
They might have needed fires in the caves to light up surroundings. Fire was an important part of their life and they must have carried it around for a part of life.
the reformers of islam such as hakim, ghazali, ibn taymiya, ibn hajr, suyuti, shah waliullah and shawkani; that the jinns are literally created from fire as mentioned in the quran and that the jinns were created before humanity as mentioned in hadith literature and that jinns are not humans but rather the jinns are different creation all together as clearlt stated in hadith and athar.
Jinns may also be the archaic or thermophyllic bacteria from which different life form evolved over the millions of years.
However, “malevolent Jinns,” that interfere with human psyche or work as slaves for humans do not exist.

The seventh chapter of a book by Paul Davies, The 5th Miracle: The Search and for the Origin and Meaning of Life, goes into details about early life forms. My paperback copy is published in 1999.
Until the European scientists stood in awe of Aristotle, no science was possible, as people would rather believe in what he said than try out experiments and find something new.
Many of the non-Ahmadi Muslims cannot think for themselves and are constantly pulled towards the judgments of the past scholars. It is good to read them and respect them, but, that should not interfere with new understanding if the present day learning coming from other spheres of knowledge so demands. This is the only genuine response to information age, rest is worship of the past scholars and living in fools paradise.
That is a good thing, if they were believing that. I have not checked that. It is alright for that time. But now that Imam Mahdi has arrived and he is also Isa Ibne Maryam (a.s.) who is mentioned in very reliable hadith as Hakam and Adal i.e. a very just judge, he has taught and given many lessons, including the passing away of Hazrat Isa a.s.
But maulvis are still trying to take Isa to heavens alive and keeping him there for 2000 years. We do not follow any maulvi of present days who are the worst creature on earth. That is described in a Hadith about later times…
The prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. said that people of his ummah will follow the Jews and the Christians exactly. They will resemble them like two shoes of a pair resemble one another. The Sahabah were surprised if such thing could happen.
But the prophet reitrated the news, and said, “Islam will be left in name only and the Quran will have words only (no meaning). the mosques will be full of people but will be void (empty) of any guidance.”
“Their Ulema will be the worst creatures on the face of the earth. People will approach them for guidance and will see that swines and monkeys are sitting there (at the seats of religion).”
That is a hadith. In that the maulvis are mentioned as “Their Ulema= Ulema hum”. That is a saying of the prophet s.a.w.s. Please note. Not anything from Ahmadis.

the prophet (saw) said that the early generations are the best so their interpretations are the most valid then any invented sects that come centuries after them.
also there is a reason why ibn taymiya, ibn hajr, suyuti and others are called reformers since they had the blessings of Allah of having the correct knowledge of the fundamentals of Islam.

To believe that earth is 10,000 years old in 1000 CE is far different from believing in the same in 2013 CE.

jinn is a created being from fire, who travel very fast and most of them are disbelievers. the jinns try to give evil suggestions to humanity thus surah an-nas is recited for protection.

Do you know how the archiac bacteria came into existence ? Also the jinn said to be created from fire may represent their fiery nature ie central personalities who can command people and influence them bcos of the class, status, position, etc .. so the holy Qur’an states that the men will blame the jinn for leading them astray . If this is true and the jinn from how non-ahmadi pointbof view where men have no control over the jinn influence the Allah will be wrong to punish them bcos it was not their fault ..
Also creating man from clay also signify their nature ie clay can be manipulated , changed to different shapes ie simply can be influenced
Hence the jinn and ins in the Qur’an can be interpreted as BIG MEN and SMALL MEN SA in authority, class, status etc

It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad ) the Book (this Qur’an). In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book [and those are the Verses of Al-Ahkam (commandments, etc.), Al-Fara’id (obligatory duties) and Al-Hudud (legal laws for the punishment of thieves, adulterers, etc.)]; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials, etc.), and seeking for ITS HIDDEN MEANINGS, but none knows its hidden meanings save Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: “We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord.” And none receive admonition except men of understanding. (Tafsir At-Tabari).
So u ahmadis say jinns are bacteria , so ur saying.the devil was bacteria as well , ahmadis use ur logic ok !!

I disagree.
“Indeed We created man from dried clay of black smooth mud. And We created the Jinn before that from the smokeless flame of fire” (Quran 15:26-27). Smoke is made out of hundreds of different chemicals and fumes, visible smoke is mostly carbon (soot), tar, oils and ash. In other words, smoke is made out of anti-matter or matter itself. The matter is formed billions of years after Big Bang. And so also the smoke. Therefore, I believe that Jinns were created out of black matter that human yet to feel and touch.
