Indonesia shuts down Ahmadiyya Mosque in latest sign of intolerance

BEKASI, Indonesia (AFP) – Indonesian authorities on Thursday shut down a mosque of the minority Muslim Ahmadiyah sect, in the latest sign of growing religious intolerance in the country.

Dozens of followers of the sect scuffled with officials putting up a fence around the Al-Misbah mosque on the outskirts of Jakarta to stop worshippers from using it, an AFP correspondent said.

“There is no freedom of religion in this country. May God give us strength to face this sad situation,” said Mr Rochim, a 65-year-old Ahmadiyah follower, as the mosque was closed off.

“If we cannot pray in our mosque, we will pray outside the mosque, even in the open air.”

  1. What a sad state of affairs in Indonesia which used to be a really nice place to live in with a lot of tolerance. I think they are trying to take the same path as Pakistan. Haven’t they seen what happened to that country lately?!

  2. This is really a very sad situation in Indonesia. Those people who has done this crime will be punished by Allah.

  3. These intolerant ‘authorities’, seem to be under the impression that they will stop our Jama’at from praying.

They will not! This earth belongs to Allah, and for a Muslim, any place is His and therefore can pray anywhere.

Alhamdulillah, that these people CANNOT and DO NOT have any control over our minds and hearts!

  4. Not a good sign, they will end up like Pakistan. The long term prospects both in terms of political and economic stability is bleak, as a portfolio investor I will be reducing my exposure to indonesia

  5. The Indonesia gov’t is just as repressive as most other Muslim gov’t. Indonesian gov’t need not continue to advertize on CNBC, how open and tolerant their country is. Bangladesh peoples, do not go the this slippery road. The Afganistan gov’t between 1890-1894 sanctioned the stoning to death of a companion, in Kabul, of the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, and ever since then has been under occupation of foreign powers.
