At the start of my current trip in the U.S. the single question that preoccupies Middle East-watchers there is what to do about Syria, and whether or not the United States should provide military assistance to the opposition groups fighting to topple the regime of President Bashar Assad.
So as the U.S. speaks boldly about bringing down the Assad regime, but does little on the critical military front to help bring this about, Islamist and other rebel groups whom the U.S. dislikes have received plenty of arms and made sustained gains militarily. (It is widely believed that the US has been training the FSA in Jordan for quite some time).
The wiser policy for the U.S. and other foreign states that oppose the Assad regime is simply to provide plenty of arms and other forms of military assistance (such as satellite intelligence) to groups it is already dealing with, such as the Syrian National Coalition, the Syrian National Council or the Free Syrian Army.
It is hard to think of a more simplistic, ineffective and counterproductive policy than the one the U.S. is now pursuing.

NOTE BY THE EDITOR: The author of this article is surprisingly naive. Of course American arms are reaching the opposition. Look at any pictures of the fighting. Just because the US supplies these weapons ‘indirectly’ via the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia it does not mean that they are not already supplying arms.

Only yesterday I saw a documentation about the war there. It strenghtened my opinion that im for Assad although not saying that he is a democrat. When shooting their bazookas or rockets each time they were yelling Allahu akbar. How perverted is this to kill people and in the same second use the word of God? What God is this who wants them to kill other people in his name?
Tarkan: I would have liked to cross out your last sentence. Allah is not to blame when someone takes His name in the wrong way. Allah’s instructions regarding war are clear: No killing of civilians. (see other relative articles on that topic).
