Jordan collected ‘world’s highest number of potential organ donors’ last December

signatures were collected during a one-day campaign organised in cooperation with Drs. And More coalition, to reach the highest number of potential donors in the world at the time, noting that the previous record was held by the US-based University of Illinois, which collected 2,262 organ donor cards.

However, the current record holder, according to the Guinness website, is the Dharmsinh Desai University in India where 4,135 people signed up as organ donors in eight hours on January 1, 2013.

In a ceremony on Saturday, the Guinness certificate was handed to HRH Prince Raad, who is president of the society.

To encourage organ donation and regulate the process, Prince Raad called on health officials to accelerate the process of drafting a law governing the establishment of an organ transplant centre and a national registry.

Minister of Health Abdul Latif Wreikat said Jordan was the first country in the region to perform an organ transplant, noting that the first successful kidney transplant in the Kingdom was performed in the late 1960s by a Royal Medical Services doctor.

Currently, he said, these surgeries are conducted at the Prince Hamzah and Al Bashir hospitals.

However, he noted that Al Bashir is the major public facility for organ transplants, and a unit was established there for this purpose in June 2012.

There are no accurate figures on the number of donors and organ transplants performed over the past few years in Jordan.

  1. The people of Jordan must then be lucky to obtain the highest number of potential organ donors. This will mean a better hope for people who will be needing organ donations in the future.
