MSN news: A young Indian woman who was gang-raped and severely beaten on a bus in New Delhi died early Saturday at a hospital in Singapore, the hospital said.
The 23-year-old victim “died peacefully,” according to a statement by Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth hospital where she was being treated.
The woman’s horrific ordeal galvanized Indians, who have held almost daily demonstrations to demand greater protection from sexual violence, from groping to rape, which impacts thousands of women every day, but which often goes unreported.
She and a male friend were travelling in a public bus on Dec. 16 evening when they were attacked by six men who raped her and beat them both. They also stripped both naked and threw them off the bus on a road.

May Allah give patience to the grieved family.
This tragedy would draw attention to the exploitation of the fair sex, from minor issues like equal pay for equal work, to domestic violence to the worst kind of exploitation, ranging from date rape to gang rape to murder.
The silver lining, in this grave tragedy, would be improving women rights, through out the world, in every country. We hope and pray. Amen!
The Indian home minister said the government had decided to send the woman abroad for treatment on the recommendation of her doctors.
India’s Home Affairs minister, Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh, said he was “heartbroken” by her death.
“I can only assure the family that the government will take whatever steps are needed to ensure that her killers get the harshest punishment in the quickest of time,” he said.
“The government will work overtime to try and bring about laws and steps that will ensure that no other person, no other citizen of this country, has to go through or undergo the same kind of trauma.”
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was “very saddened” by the woman’s death, and that the angry public reaction was “perfectly understandable”.
“It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action,” he said in a statement.
