The issue of Ahmadi’s in Pakistan appears to be more important than honouring the life of the country’s only Nobel Laureate.
Dr. Abdus Salam passed away on November 21, 1996 in England at the age of 70. He was the country’s only Nobel Laureate and won the prize in 1979 for his work in theoretical physics and for his discovery of the ‘God’ particle. Dr. Salam was the first Pakistani and the first and only Muslim to receive a Nobel Prize in Physics. He contributed heavily to the rise of Pakistan to the physics community of the world.

Sadly, instead of honouring a son of the country the government is ignoring the call for tributes to appease the religious extremists because Dr. Salam was an Ahmadi.
It was during Zia-ul-Haq’s oppressive rule when Ahmadis were banned from calling themselves Muslim and building their mosques in the Islamic Republic. Their places of worship were shut down or desecrated by hard-line Islamist with the support of the state.

Pity, pity and pity for an honorable person bestowed by other countries to be their citizen but refused to accept their offer because adamant and proud to be a Pakistani. Nevertheless Pakistan itself refuted him to be Pakistani and do not deserved any tribute just him being an Ahmadi whom the then government led by Zia-ul-Haq had made decree declaration that Ahmadis are non-Muslim.
Pakistan is a pathetic country and does not deserve to share the honour of this great man. Perhaps, and hopefully, one day the situation will change.
I am saddened to know that the plaque on the house of Dr Salam in Jhang has been removed. I visited the house, the school and mosque near the house in March 2009. Dr Salam never disowned Pakistan, even on his death bed his last wish, as told by High Commissioner of Pakistan, was that he be buried be in Pakistan. While the world is celebrating his genius and scientific achievements, Pakistan has disowned him. What a pity.
Pakistan has in fact practically disowned every sensible rational and honest approach on any matter.How much and on how many issues will we grieve? It is a catastrophic condition.Its sense of wisdom is on death bed. Alas and Alas!

It is really a very sad and painful to note this bad treatment being meted out to such a noble, saint-like scientist, Abdus Salam (servant of peace)of worlds of ‘physics’ and ‘Mathematics’ whom the whole world respects as one of the greatest physicist of the 21st century. But alas!he is deliberately kept almost unknown in his own mother country Pakistan. It seems very strange that on the side of Pakistani Punjab the public knows not much about this world famed physicist. But across the border in India’s(Eastern)Punjab, Dr. Salam is wel-known and admired for his scientific works and achievements. For instance, Prof. H.S. Virk of the Deptt. of Physics,Guru Nanak Dev University, Amratsar, India, writes that “If Trieste has become a Mecca for Third World scientists over the years since the creation of ICTP in 1964, Abdus Salam, Nobel Laueate and a genius from Punjab was destined to play the role of a prophet of Third World Scientists”.–“Current Science’,Volume 72, No.11, dt. June,10, 1997.
And, recently on 4th July, 2012 the name of Dr. Salam splashed through the world in print and electronic media when, CERN office of Geneva announced that world’s biggest particle physics laboratory carried out its most expensive experiment in the 27 km long tunnel near Swiss border, the results of this lab. experiment have proved,the decades old theoretical prediction of Dr. Salam as correct and true.A great forward step in physical science of the Universe.This newly discovered minutest component particle Physical Universe under Higgs Boson theory has been named as “The God particle”. This name must have surely pleased the heart and soul of Dr.Salam in the world hereafter.Alhamdolillah. All praise to God Almighty. May God bless his soul, Ameen.
We should be sure whether Pakistan Celebrates him or not God is not going to let his hard work go waste. In-Shaa’Allah. In-Shaa’Allah many more Abdusssalams will emerge in this Jamaat.
But it does not mean we Ahmadis or other rational people that applaud him and consider him areal hero should not feel bad or raise a voice on what injustice is being inflicted to him out of sheer discrimination and ignorance.
WE should bring it into awareness of world.
What a sorry state of affairs. It is painful sight of the Jhang house of Dr. Salam,which was taken over by the Government of Pakistan as a National Monument, is in such a shape of disrepair and neglect. It is suggested that someone from amongst his students or the Trieste beneficiaries(teachers) of local College, take up this issue with the people in Islamabad, responsible to look after the National Monuments,and try to awaken them to their responsibilities.The 2-Marla small house of two rooms be immediately repaired and a new marble plaque, describing its historical worth, be made and fixed on the top of entry door. This National Monument building can be used as a library/reading room under the supervision of Jhang District council.
