Jakarta Post:
Temple epitomizes tolerance
A Balinese woman of Chinese descent offers her prayers at the kongco inside the Ulun Danu Batur temple in Kintamani.
An ancient temple in Batur is the living epitome of religious and cultural tolerance, a value often associated with Balinese culture. A beautiful kongco (Chinese place of worship) lies inside the Balinese Hindu temple and, from time immemorial, Balinese Hindus, Balinese of Chinese descent, Buddhists and Confucian devotees have treated the temple as their shared cultural legacy.
The kongco architecture is an obvious testament to that shared cultural legacy. The sign hung above the kongco wooden door bears gold-colored Chinese letters, while the wooden door is elaborately carved in the Balinese style with beautiful decorative patterns. Statues of Chinese guardians stand side-by-side with Balinese dragons.
