Fiji praised for consumer law

FIJI’S CONSUMER LAWS PRAISED AT INTERNATIONAL MEET

Press Release Ministry of InformationThe International Standard Organization or ISO – the world’s largest developer and publisher of International standards for goods and services has praised Fiji’s consumer laws.

 Speaking at the 34th ISO COPOLCO Conference on consumer protection, the Vice President of ISO Mr SadaoTakeda said that the Fijian Government has taken a pro active stand to address consumer protection with the setting up of the Consumer Council of Fiji.

He adds that since then, Fiji has an active consumer movement with the rights of the everyday buyer high on the Bainimarama Government’s agenda.

Takeda and other delegates were informed of the 212 various laws that have been revamped since 2009 with majority targeting consumers such as spot fines for illegal practices by retailers and producers, the labeling of products to be done in the English language and more recently the waiving of fees for those businesses affected by the recent floods.

Takeda also praised the resilience of the Fijian people as the country hosts its first international conference just weeks after being hit by a devastating flood.

Earlier today Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama highlighted to participants that Government upholds the importance of accountability and transparency and has included these values and principles into the various laws.
“Fiji is one of the few countries in the Pacific to directly address Standards and Metro logy. Relevant laws were amended in 2010 to make enforcement easier and meaningful with the introduction of on the spot fines for illegal practices which has given consumers greater protection.”
