Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1 mile (1.6 km) in thickness. It holds a lot of earth’s fresh water.
“And We (Allah) send impregnating winds, then We send down water from the clouds, then We give it to you to drink; and you are not the ones to store it up.” (Al Quran 15:23)
- Glaciers store about 69% of the world’s freshwater, and if all land ice melted the seas would rise about 70 meters (about 230 feet).
- During the last ice age (when glaciers covered more land area than today) the sea level was about 400 feet lower than it is today. At that time, glaciers covered almost one-third of the land.
To read about water cycle and the Holy Quran, read a chapter of a book by Maurice Bucaille, The Bible, the Quran and Science.
