Turkish President ends Dutch visit

Turkish President Abdullah Gül marked the end of a three-day state visit to the Netherlands in a ceremony in the southern city of Maastricht attended by Queen Beatrix. After the Dutch and Turkish national anthems were played in a square in the centre of the city, President Gül inspected a military guard of honour.

The president and his wife Hayrunissa departed from Maastricht Airport for their flight back to Turkey. Queen Beatrix, who had invited the presidential couple, bade farewell to the Güls at the aircraft boarding stairs.

“Kurd-basher and Hamas-lover”
The visit took place amid a storm of controversy after the Freedom Party leader said that Gül is not welcome in the Netherlands. On Twitter, Wilders called the president a “Kurd-basher and Hamas-lover”. President Gül, in turn, said Wilders was an “islamophobe” in a national Dutch newspaper.
