Health Ministry to probe sale of recycled cooking oil

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will launch an immediate investigation into claims that recycled cooking oil is being sold for human consumption at grocery stores and supermarkets across the country.

Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said it is illegal for manufacturers to sell recycled oil for human consumption, and warned that legal action would be taken against errant manufacturers.

“We can take action under the Food Act 1983, on the selling of non-sellable items. We are definitely very serious about this. We don’t want anything hazardous to go in the market,” he said when contacted.

Liow was commenting on an expose by The Star yesterday, quoting experts as claiming that a total of 19 brands of 1kg cooking oil packets sold nationwide were found to have been made from cooking oil recycled from hotels and restaurants.

They said the oil, if used repeatedly, could lead to hypertension, damage to the liver and a potential cause of cancer
