Baduy Tribe Seek Recognition of Religion

Representatives of the Inner Baduy tribe in Lebak district in Banten plan to seek help from the Constitutional Court in getting their traditional religion officially recognized.

In 1998, the Sundanese numbered about 33 million, most of whom lived in West Java.

“We request that the justices of the Constitutional Court rule that Sunda Wiwitan, as the religion of the Baduy people, be listed on our ID cards,” Dainah, a Baduy elder and head of Kanekes village, told Antara news agency.

Sunda Wiwitan is the animist religion of around 11,000 Inner and Outer Baduy tribes, and is one of 250 traditional faiths practiced in Indonesia. Read more

  1. Sunda Wiwitan is not animist, they worship God, the One and Only, the Merciful and Compassionate, under His Name, Sang Hyang Kersa.
