Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayb of the Islamic University of al-Azhar in Cairo, one of the foremost authorities of Islamic jurisprudence in the world, laid out on a Wednesday a set of steps to “defend the holy city of Jerusalem.”
A delegation from the Palestinian group the Popular Campaign to Resist the Judaization of Jerusalem helped al-Tayb with his recommendations, and the plan was agreed upon by number of other prominent Islamic thinkers and theologians.
Al-Tayb told Egyptian media that he would work to establish a special cultural center for the study of Jerusalem at al-Azhar University, focusing on the Islamic holy sites in Palestine and the dangers the Israeli occupation pose to them.
He warned that planned Israeli demolitions, such as that of the Moroccan Gate bridge leading to al-Aqsa Mosque, would need to be matched by “serious, diligent work” by Palestinians.
“True victory over Israel will only be achieved through true knowledge and serious work,” said al-Tayb.
He said this “true knowledge” could not remain confined to a small minority of researchers, but needed to become widespread among “the masses.” He expressed regret that Muslims were as yet unable to “liberate the stones of al-Aqsa.”
