The main reasons that some Palestinians are worried about joining the UN are related to the ‘threats’ (=blackmail?) of the US and even the EU that they might stop funding the Palestinians, if they try to join the UN. Mr. Mahmud Abbas (whom I have met personally in Amman, Jordan, some time ago) has risen in my esteem that he does not back down because of these threats. Money given with ‘strings attached’ should be refused – a difficult task I know when one is in need.
(Some people might think that my comments above contradict my other article about ‘getting out of the UN’. Not really. Let Palestine join and then try to encourages others ‘en bloc’ to get out again!
