One small bottle of water: The difference between President Assad and King Abdullah of Jordan

His Majesty the King failed to give his secret to President Assad in time

When comparing the reaction of President Assad of Syria and King Abdullah of Jordan to the present ‘demand for change’ in both countries one small big thing has to my knowledge not (yet) been reported.

Both leaders are of course reluctant to give up any of their powers. But how do they prevent it?

We all know that President Assad uses bullets. His Secret Service and his army are cracking down most cruelly, killing hundreds of people, if not thousands. He still has control, but of course has lost all respect of his citizens (except from those who are part of the killing machine).

And how does His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan respond? He talks a lot about ‘reform’, even though we have not seen any real change so far. But this is a minor thing. What is the major thing?

His Majesty King Abdullah has instructed the police force that, instead of using bullets, they should distribute small bottles of water, with small packets of biscuits, to the demonstrators. It worked and it works! Surely no one in their sane mind can speak up against a person arranging to distribute cool water during a hot long day!?

May the peace and tranquility of Jordan remain! May Jordan be an example for other states to follow!! and may be even: “Long live the King” (!?!)

(Sorry for this small question mark. In the short term the bottles of water came in very useful, but the real changes should hopefully still follow).
