AMMAN –– Some 40 university students have decided to hit the streets during Ramadan to distribute water and dates to motorists and passers-by who are not at home at sunset – the time of iftar.

The volunteers, who are part of a larger group of 500 students from the University of Jordan, are working on a daily basis to reach their objective of handing out 1,000 packs of dates and water by the end of the holy month to passers-by near their campus.

The move by the students, who preferred to embrace a charity project rather than share iftar meals with their families, is part of an initiative called “Shabab Gheir Fi Shaher El Khair”, meaning “different youth spirit in the month of good deeds”.

Delivering small iftar kits to motorists is the first step of the initiative, according to Randa Tambi, one of the organisers, who said the volunteers are also planning to hold iftar banquets for around 180 orphans during the fasting month.

She noted that the banquets will be held at the university restaurant, where musical activities will also take place to entertain the orphans.

During the last 10 days of the holy month, food parcels will be given to those less fortunate in refugee camps, in addition to underprivileged families in the Kingdom’s southern and northern regions and the Jordan Valley, Tambi said.

“We plan to continue even after Ramadan to help underprivileged families and orphans across the Kingdom,” she added.
