Tough challenges facing Church in Malta

The outcome of Saturday’s referendum, when the majority of voters supported the formal introduction of divorce, and what the bishops had to say in their note issued just as voting stopped show that the Church in Malta is faced with a number of significant and urgent challenges that cannot be underestimated.

The Church knows that the good and coordinated preparation of young people for marriage and family life in our times, pressured as they are by hedonism and selfishness, which tend to subordinate everything to their own satisfaction, is more necessary than ever.

It surely realises that its pastoral action must be progressive, also in the sense that it must follow the family, accompanying it step by step in the different stages of its formation and development. The bishops’ promise of profound reflection on how the Church can improve its work to ensure that the Christian family is truly a force of love and stability is, therefore, crucial. More so in the light of the divorce referendum result.
