The United Arab Emirates has hired the in-famous private security firm ‘Blackwater’ to establish an 800 mercenary army (as a first step) to keep the Rulers safe… The crown prince insisted that no Muslim should be part of this ‘force’ (because a Muslim may refuse to kill another Muslim, presumably). Reminds me of the Mamluk dynasty
Mamluk, literally ‘owned’, was a soldier of slave origin who had converted to Islam. The phenomenon started in 9th century AD and gradually the mamluks became a powerful military caste in various Muslim societies. Particularly in Egypt, but also in the Levant, Iraq, and India, mamluks held political and military power.
